Topics of Expertise
SANDRA STADHEIM’S University Courses Science Fun for Everyone K-6 science activities that the classroom teacher can share with limited space, time and supplies. Self Esteem for Students and Teachers What are some of the signals that all is not well in the classroom? Who is at fault? What can be done? Managing Disruptive Behavior What to do with the rotten few? OR ARE THEY? Kids by nature are good! There are lots of methods to make life bearable for all!! A Better Assessment This is designed to help hesitant teachers feel more comfortable initiating portfolios in their classrooms and also implementing time for their own professional lives. Students will identify the purpose and values for personal growth and assessment of children and adults; learn appropriate timing for initiating portfolios; and methods for implementing a portfolio program. Thinking can be Second Nature Participants will learn the steps to develop the thinking process and how to motivate students in the process. Become familiar with the principles of thinking and problem solving and becoming aware of teaching methods to stimulate creativity. Math can Happen Math is obtainable for all students IF it is approached in a variety of methods. The Internet is a wonderful tool for the teaching of math. A considerable amount of time is spent in this course arranging your own math curriculum for your students. Women in Math Math is an area where females are told not to excel and we often forget that there have been women who have done remarkable studies in math, through this course teachers will have new “ammunition” to offer female students. Strategies for Teaching Mathematics Participants will learn strategies about the way children learn math through the use of manipulatives and theory based on Piagetian research. They will study the difficulties and why they exist. This course is designed to increase the skills both below and above teaching level. Reading Was…What Happened? Reading was once important everywhere…it still is. What has happened? Why has it happened? What can de done about it? Everything from K-12 needs to be examined more carefully. Interdisciplinary Unit Building 1 or 2 credits This is not the not the end of the world. It is OK to communicate with other departments perhaps even other grades. What is team work/building? Is it only a middle school swear word? How do we build the units to be taught in this manner? The Internet is an integral part of this course. What Makes you Think I’m a Girl? We are in the 21st Century but are we equal? A look at what is happening in the work world. Is it always the female who is at risk? A closer look at the way things are said, looked at, and WHY! Art Across the Curriculum Art projects are not just for little kids. Art is an important way of expressing emotions and learning to share a learned experience. Incorporating art back into the curriculum as the purse strings are pulled and costs are cut. Substitute Teaching Can be a positive Substituting can be a nerve wrecking experience or it can be a nice way of staying in touch with what is happening in the education world and hoping to get into a district. Internet services will be used in this class and putting a portfolio of ideas together is part of the plan. Human Relations 1-3 credits This course satisfies the requirement of the state of South Dakota for human relations. There is the option of choosing one, two, three credits to complete your South Dakota teaching certification. I have also taught most Elementary methods courses in South Dakota and would be open to developing more courses as needed for this purpose.
