Understandings & Goals

Enduring Understanding: I want them to understand how history can be intertwined with music appreciation. This creates a more meaningful explanation of historical events. The students will also learn the Powerpoint program and be able to utilize it in high school as well as post secondary school.
Goal(s): 1. To understand how history evolves. 2. To recognize how different events and people have shaped our future. 3. To be able to learn about different people, places, and inventions. 4. To be able to use Powerpoint as an academic tool.

Questions Answered

Essential questions: 1. What are some comparisons between the various decades? 2. What effects did the previous decades have on the proceeding decades? 3. Which famous person do you most admire and why?
Objectives: 1. Students will be able to use music to describe significant historical events. 2. Students will be able to utilize the Powerpoint program efficiently. 3. Students will be able to describe the meaning of musical lyrics. 4. Students will be able to demonstrate the accomplishments and influences of people and events.

Assessment

What quiz and test items (e.g. simple content-focused questions that require a single, best answer) will provide evidence of understanding? A matching test that covers material presented will be used to assess student’s understanding.
What academic prompts (e.g. open-ended questions or problems that require students to think critically and then to prepare a response / product / performance) will provide evidence of understanding? Groups will answer open ended questions asked by the class.
What performance tasks and projects (e.g. complex challenges that are authentic, mirror the real world and require a performance or product) will you include that will provide evidence of student understanding? Students will use the internet to research information and then compile that information into their Powerpoint presentations. What other evidence (e.g. observations, work samples, dialogues, student self-assessment) of understanding will you collect? Rubrics, observation, and student presentations using Powerpoint.

Instructional Strategies

Students will use a combination of inquiry-based and project-based learning to complete the lesson, “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” Students will compile information about their research objectives. Each group will be assigned the objectives. The objectives that will be discussed are to identify each item assigned, then tie-in the signifigance of each item assigned to the time period. Students will design a slide show (Powerpoint) and teach their objectives to the class.
