Using the Bible

For grade(s) 7.

We want students to recognize the names of books in the Bible.  They will recognize if they are from the Hebrew Scripture or the New Testament.

Subject & Standards

1. Skills and Resources:

Needs Assessment/Rational

We will ask the student to look up a Bible reference as an individual, or a small group, or a large group.  This skill needs to be mastered, to the point that the table of contents will help them at the elementary level and at the higher levels the student will find the reference though a quick thumb through.

Equipment/Materials Needed

Bible, paper

Understandings & Goals

Students will be able to use the table of contents to use the Bible.  Advanced students will know the order of the reference books well enough to thumb through and find the Bible reference.

Questions Answered

1. How can we find Bible references in the Bible? 2. What is mastering the Books of the Bible?

Assessment

The students will use the Bible as individual, or in small groups, or in a larger group.  They will demonstrate visually and orally that they can find the reference.

Instructional Strategies

1. A group of students will make flip flops to practice if the book is from Hebrew Scripture or New Testament.  2. Another group will make tests to share that will review the two testaments.  3. Graphic organizers will group books according to simiarities done by a third group.  4. Another group will formulate jingles they have heard in the past or that they make up in the now.  5. The groups will present the materials they have organized.  6. Teacher will organize the group according to a learning style assessment given on an earlier date.

Procedures

Teacher groups students according to learning style.  Those that are visual learners will make a graphic organization of the books of the Bible.  Those that are auditory learners will share a jingle they have learned in the past or make some up in the now.  Those that learn through memorization will make tests reviewing which testament the book comes from.  The kinesthetic learners will make flip-flops.  They will share them with others in the group after they are finished.
