Power Point Snowman Unit
For grade(s) 1.
Subject & Standards
Library/Technology Literacy: 2. Developing Products Using Media/Technology. 3. Technological Systems.Understandings & Goals
Enduring Understanding:That they can use programs on the computer to create a picture and text similar to what they would do with pencil and paper in a traditional style story writing about a snowman friend.
Goal(s): 1. To understand the use and function of the classroom digital camera. 2. To understand the use of the power point drawing tools and textbox. 3. To understand how the computer can be used to tell a class story about snowmen by using power point. 4. To learn about snow time fun through a variety of resources. 5. To create a story page about a snowman friend and tell two sentences about the snowman.
Questions Answered
Essential questions: 1. How to use a digital camera to take snow pictures of classmates outside during recess time. 2. How to insert disk into computer, access the pictures, and insert into power point. 3. How to access power point, use the drawing tool, add color, add text box, keyboard sentences about snowman student has drawn. 4. How to save product in power point. 5. Prior to technology involvment: What do you know about outdoor snow fun? What snow fun do you like to do? What new snow fun did you learn about? What story did you enjoy most and why?
Objectives: 1. To learn how to insert disk into digital camera and how to operate the camera. 2. To take pictures of classmates outside at recess in the snow doing different snow activities that tell why first graders like snow. 3. To learn how to insert disk into computer to accesss the pictures and insert the pictures into power point. 4. To learn how to use power point drawing tools, adding color to picture. 5. To learn how to use textbox in power point to add sentences telling about snowman drawn. 6. To learn how to save power point template. 7. To learn how a power point presentation is put together to tell the story of Snowman Day. 8. To learn how to tell a one page story about a snowman friend.
Assessment
What quiz and test items (e.g. simple content-focused questions that require a single, best answer) will provide evidence of understanding?
1. I will ask students to demonstrate use of digital camera: including disk insert, turn camera on, take picture, look at pic to check for quality, turn camera off, remove disk. 2. I will use a simple checklist for this. 3. I will ask students to demonstrate knowledge of power point: access power point, click for blank template, click for drawing tools, click for textbox, and how to save product. 4. I will use a simple checklist for this. 5. I will conference with each student proofreading their snowman template page as well as sentences for digital pictures.
What academic prompts (e.g. open-ended questions or problems that require students to think critically and then to prepare a response / product / performance) will provide evidence of understanding?
1. Students will respond to teacher questions about their successful use of camera and power point. 2. Students will partner up and view each other’s snowman templates to see if all items required are included. (i.e. snowman drawing with color added, textbox with two sentences about snowman, labeled with name of student)
What performance tasks and projects (e.g. complex challenges that are authentic, mirror the real world and require a performance or product) will you include that will provide evidence of student understanding?
1. Students will create a power point template using drawing tools to make a snowman picture adding color to hat, boots, etc. 2. A textbox will be inserted with two sentences keyboarded telling name of snowman and what he likes to do.
What other evidence (e.g. observations, work samples, dialogues, student self-assessment)of understanding will you collect?
1. I will have students print out his/her template. 2. Students will self-assess if all requirements for template are included in their finished page. 3. I will use a rubric assessment for the camera and power point checklists mentioned above.
Instructional Strategies
Project-based: Students will be shown how to use digital camera and given a chance to practice. Each student will then follow instructions they learned to take a picture of a classmate in the snow as directed. Students will see a demonstration on power poin. They will do a snowman practice page using drawing tools. The next computer lab session, they will draw final product and learn how to save it. The following lab sesssion, students will learn about textboxes and then keyboard their two sentences about their snowman and again save. The computer lab is a great place for collaborative learning as students ask each other about “how to” and help each other with their templates. Students will be given a chance to insert their picture from the digital camera into a template and add a sentence about the activity the picture shows. Prior to technology involvment students will engage in reading about and responding to snow stories. Students will create a one page story about a snowman friend including a drawing and two sentences.
