ND Curriculum Initiative

The North Dakota Curriculum Initiative (NDCI) is a long-term professional development program for North Dakota public and non-public school curriculum administrators and teachers.

Letter Patterns

For grade(s) K-4.

The students will be given a Growing T pattern. Using manipulatives they will build the next 2 patterns.  Using manipulatives or graph paper they will develope a T chart and find the 10th step.  They will communicate their thinking and the rules in writing.  The same process will be followed for Growing I and U patterns.

Subject & Standards

5. Algebra, Functions, and Patterns:

Needs Assessment/Rational

On the NDSA and Map assessments, Algebra was one of our school’s weakest area.

Equipment/Materials Needed

Growing letter patterns presented on the overhead or board. Pattern blocks and one centimeter graph.  Paper and pencil.

Understandings & Goals

I want the students to able to recognize and continue simple patterns and change the patterns into mathematical ideas.  I want them to be able to utilize effective math strategies to solve the problems.  I want them to be able to explain their thinking in writing.

Questions Answered

1.  The students will continue a pattern utilizing pattern blocks or graph paper.  2.  The students will develope a T-chart for the pattern.  3. the students will find the rule for the pattern.  4.  The students will communicate their strategies in writing.

Assessment

Students understanding will be demonstrated in their finished work.  Classroom observations and teacher assessment rubrics will be utilized for assessment.

Instructional Strategies

Working cooperatively and following the group of 4 rules, the students will utilize a variety of strategies to build then next 2 patterns, develop a T chart, and identifiy the rule for the Growing T pattern.  They will communicate their thinking through writing.  The students will be given the option of working in groups or individually for the other patterns.
