Careers For Me

For grade(s) 8.

Subject & Standards

1. Career, Community, and Family Connections:

Understandings & Goals

Enduring Understanding: I want my students to understand that, in order to choose a career, they must first learn more about themselves (personal strengths, weaknesses, goals, ability levels, desired lifestyle, desired income).
Goal(s): 1. Students will learn more about themselves.  2. Students will be introduced to career options for their future.  3. Students will successfully register for high school courses.

Questions Answered

Essential questions: 1. What do you plan to be doing 10 years from today? 2. What career do you think is best suited for you?  3. Why is it important to learn more about yourself before choosing your educational and career paths?
Objectives: 1. Students will become aware of a wide range of careers. 2. Students will identify possible careers that would be best suited for them.  3. Students will use their self-awareness to successfully register for high school courses.

Assessment

What quiz and test items (e.g. simple content-focused questions that require a single, best answer) will provide evidence of understanding?  None
What academic prompts (e.g. open-ended questions or problems that require students to think critically and then to prepare a response / product / performance) will provide evidence of understanding?  Open-ended questioning will be used.
What performance tasks and projects (e.g. complex challenges that are authentic, mirror the real world and require a performance or product) will you include that will provide evidence of student understanding? Students will successfully register for 9th grade high school courses.
What other evidence (e.g. observations, work samples, dialogues, student self-assessment) of understanding will you collect? Students will produce self-reflection journals and self-assessments as evidence of their understanding.

Instructional Strategies

Inquiry based strategies will be used to enable students to investigate various careers and participate in self exploration/awareness activities. Throughout the investigation process, each student will work independently to seek information about himself and careers best suited for him. Upon completion of the exploration process, each student will successfully register for 9th grade courses.
