13 Colonies Study

For grade(s) 5.

Subject & Standards

2. Important Historical Events:

Understandings & Goals

Enduring Understanding: I want the students to describe the differences within the 13 colonies which would include foods, geographical locations, homes, trades, and basic survival skills.
Goal(s): In order to better understand the life of a colonist, the students will explore their different ways of living.

Questions Answered

Essential questions: 1. What were the different lifestyles in the 13 colonies?  2. How did these people survive?  3. How and what did the colonists learn from each other?
Objectives: 1. Students will work in pairs to research about the lifestyles of one colony. 2.  Each pair will create a slide show using Powerpoint and their own voices on the slide show to tell about the lifestyles of a colony. 3. Students will gather information from various websites and books to put into their slide show. 4. Students will present their slideshow to their class.

Assessment

What quiz and test items (e.g. simple content-focused questions that require a single, best answer) will provide evidence of understanding?
The students’ final presentation to the class will be graded and will include their slide presentation and a question answer period afterwards. Each student will be given a rubric before they start their project so they know what is expected of them to obtain a certain grade.
What academic prompts (e.g. open-ended questions or problems that require students to think critically and then to prepare a response / product / performance) will provide evidence of understanding?
Each pair will be given specific topics that they need to include in their slide presentations. These topics will be information about their specific colony such as a map, food, trade, homes, basic survival skills, and weapons.
What performance tasks and projects (e.g. complex challenges that are authentic, mirror the real world and require a performance or product) will you include that will provide evidence of student understanding?
Students will prepare a slide presentation using powerpoint showing what they learned about their colony and present it to the class.
What other evidence (e.g. observations, work samples, dialogues, student self-assessment) of understanding will you collect?
I will collect the written information that they compiled to create their slideshow. Each group will print out a copy of their Power Point that I will attach to their rubric. These will be returned and filled out by their teacher for their final grade.

Instructional Strategies

Students will use inquiry-based and project based learning to learn about the life of colonists. Through research they will use a variety of resources such as books, videos, filmstrips and the Internet to gather and record their information. By using project based learning they will create a slide show and give a presentation on a colony to their class.
