In Professional Learning Communities collaborative teams work interdependently to achieve common goals. In order to determine what we want all students to learn—by grade level, by course and as a district—we must determine the (essential) learning goals and learning targets for our students. Learning progressions can then be developed to make the learning within a discipline coherent. This session features the expertise of our keynote speakers, Margaret Heritage and Ellen Osmundson (CRESST) who will guide us through the research and recommendations for schools and districts related to learning progressions and formative assessment processes.
Featured Presenters:
Margaret Heritage is Assistant Director for Professional Development at the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards and Student Testing (CRESST) at UCLA. Her current work at CRESST focuses on data use for school improvement, including formative assessment, the development of literacy assessment tools and the measurement of teachers’ mathematics knowledge.
Prior to joining CRESST she had many years experience in schools in the U.K and the U.S., including a period as a County Inspector of Education in the U.K., and as Principal of the University Elementary School, the laboratory school of the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA. Heritage was also member of the faculty in the Department of Education at the University of Warwick, England, and in the U.S. has taught courses in the Departments of Education at UCLA and at Stanford University.
Most recently, she co-authored the forthcoming book, Formative Assessment for Literacy Learning (Sage/Corwin Press), co-edited and contributed to a special issue of Educational Assessment (2006) on formative assessment, and was a contributing author to a new book from Yale University Press, The Language Demands of School: Putting academic language to the test (2006).
Ellen Osmundson is a senior researcher at the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST) at UCLA. Her research interests include science education, cognitive development, literacy, professional development, and program evaluation. She received her MA and PhD in learning and instruction/psychological studies from the University of California, Los Angeles.

• How do we know if students are learning?
• What should effective assessment look like?
• What does research say about the importance of feedback in learning?
• How do grading practices and policies fit in with learning?
How do we know if students are learning?
