Assessment and Instruction: Which is the Cart and Which is the Horse?
50%, A, 10 Right, 5 Wrong, 1—- Grades, scores, tests, numbers—How does this help students (or teachers for that matter) make sense of student learning. In this session, teachers will explore how to use assessments (along the way and at the end) to truly discover what students know and are able to do. Participants will incorporate actual student work to investigate the cues and clues that help teachers understand their students’ thinking and misconceptions.
During this session participants will: examine the relationship between instruction and assessment; consider how belief systems can impact assessment; learn how to use student work to inform instruction; learn strategies to help students be more accountable for their own learning.

Effective Science Instruction Session 2:  Incorporating Inquiry Instruction
In this session participants will begin by learning about the research on inquiry science instruction. In this session we will: review the five features of inquiry and then look at sample lessons to see how inquiry based they are; analyze video clips to observe teachers implementing inquiry approaches to help their students understand science concepts; look at practical ways that you can revise existing lessons to make them more inquiry-based; model the process and then practice on your own lessons. Participants should bring a sample lesson to revise.
